Writing in the Harvard Business Review, Tammy Erickson points out the loosening of trust between employers and the employed.
She says the most recent recession differs from those in the past due to the use of furloughs and pay cuts to reduce costs. Employees (and their teenage children) take away the lesson that full-time work does not guarantee full-time pay.
Erckson predicts the results will be:
1-Having two jobs will become the norm.
2-Push back from employees who won't work 24x7 anymore--especially because they need the time for that second job.
3-Management will have to compete for employee's discretionary energy. Most of today's jobs require more than just going through the motions.
4-More diverse work arrangements. Employee preferences and new technologies will change traditional expectations.
5-Less paternalism, more choice. She expects menus of benefit options to become more common, and even for employees to set their own compensation levels. |
